Relocation expenses support

(if the professorship is permanent)

The University of Vienna awards you as a newly appointed university professor a one-off lump sum payment to cover the costs of your relocation to Vienna – you are free to select your own removal company.


You will receive this payment with your first salary payment.


As a university professor you are employed by the University of Vienna, so this relocation costs support is part of your income from employment and thus taxable.

Application for tax assessment

 

You have the option of lodging an application for tax assessment with your  local tax office (dependent on where you live). This should be done within five years of the end of the fiscal assessment period. As part of this application, you may claim the relocation expenses as income-related expenses.

Note: The conditions and guidance notes can be found in the Mobility Bonus information sheet. Any detailed questions should be clarified with a tax advisor.


Our tip:

Make sure you keep all invoices pertaining to relocation expenses. You must be able to present these to the tax office upon request.
